What’s the easiest way to empty a grass catcher?

If you’ve ever used a grass catcher or leaf collector on your lawnmower, then you know emptying the bin, basket or bag can be a bear.

• Some systems are heavy.
• Some don’t have an easy way to lift or hold them.

As a general rule, grass catchers and leaf collectors are manually lifted and dumped onto a mulch pile, into the back of a truck, or on a trailer – by hand. Instead of collecting grass clippings in a bag, side-discharge grass catchers redirect the clippings to the side of the lawnmower. They usually have a chute or deflector that allows the clippings to be discharged onto the lawn while mowing. Side discharge catchers are commonly found on larger walk-behind and riding mowers, and they are suitable for mowing larger areas where frequent emptying of a catcher basket may be impractical.

 

Mulching Grass Catcher

Some lawnmowers offer a mulching feature where the clippings are finely chopped and redistributed back onto the lawn as natural fertilizer. These mowers often have a mulching plate that can be attached or detached. When the mulching plate is removed, the lawnmower can be used with a grass catcher attachment to collect the clippings instead of mulching them.

Combination Grass Catcher

Some grass catchers offer versatility by combining multiple functionalities. For example, a grass or leaf catcher may include a mulching feature, allowing the user to choose between collecting the clippings or mulching them depending on their preference or lawn conditions.
