If you’ve ever used a grass catcher or leaf collector on your lawnmower, then you know emptying the bin, basket or bag can be a bear.

  • Some systems are heavy.
  • Some don’t have an easy way to lift or hold them.
  • Some are so large that they are hard to handle and maneuver.
  • Odd shapes also add extra challenges.

As a general rule, grass catchers and leaf collectors are manually lifted and dumped onto a mulch pile, into the back of a truck, or on a trailer – by hand. This is very hard on a worker’s arms and back – especially if the catcher is heavy, awkward or if it is something done repeatedly throughout the day. A simpler and easier method is to use a grass clipping catcher that dumps itself!

Aluminum Self Dumping Grass Catcher

There’s no lifting, shaking, cramping or face planting – not that any of us have done that!

For commercial lawncare services, that traditionally lift and dump grass catchers into a truck or trailer by hand, a motorized grass catcher can save a lot of time emptying by dumping the clippings onto a tarp as they pass by. Once the job is done – or the tarp is full – simply lift the tarp into the truck or trailer and you’re on your way!

Currently, the only grass catcher with motorized dumping capabilities to accommodate this method is the KAGE Katcher, which is available in either or aluminum or steel. Both offer the same design and function, with the differences being in price and weight. The steel Kage Katcher is significantly heavier and lower cost, while the aluminum Kage Katcher offers a convenient lightweight option and roughly a 50% higher price tag due to material costs.

Types of Grass Catchers

There are several other different types of lawnmower grass catchers available, each designed to suit different types of mowers and user preferences. Here are some common types of lawn clipping catchers most of which require manual dumping to empty.

Fabric Bag Grass CatcherFabric Bag Grass Catcher

This is the most common type of grass catcher and is often found on push mowers and smaller walk-behind mowers. It consists of a bag made of fabric or mesh material that attaches to the rear of the lawnmower. The fabric bag allows air to flow through while collecting grass clippings.

Some lawnmowers, particularly self-propelled or riding mowers, come with grass clipping collectors made of a hard-shell plastic or metal material. These catchers have a solid container with a lid or hinged opening for emptying the clippings. Hard-shell grass catchers offer durability and can hold a larger volume of clippings compared to fabric bags.

Instead of collecting grass clippings in a bag, side-discharge grass catchers redirect the clippings to the side of the lawnmower. They usually have a chute or deflector that allows the clippings to be discharged onto the lawn while mowing. Side discharge catchers are commonly found on larger walk-behind and riding mowers, and they are suitable for mowing larger areas where frequent emptying of a catcher basket may be impractical.

Mulching Grass Catcher

Some lawnmowers offer a mulching feature where the clippings are finely chopped and redistributed back onto the lawn as natural fertilizer. These mowers often have a mulching plate that can be attached or detached. When the mulching plate is removed, the lawnmower can be used with a grass catcher attachment to collect the clippings instead of mulching them.

Combination Grass Catcher

Some grass catchers offer versatility by combining multiple functionalities. For example, a grass or leaf catcher may include a mulching feature, allowing the user to choose between collecting the clippings or mulching them depending on their preference or lawn conditions.

It’s important to note that the availability of specific grass catcher types may vary depending on the lawnmower make and model. When purchasing a lawnmower, it’s recommended to check the manufacturer’s specifications or consult with a sales representative to determine the types of grass catchers compatible with your particular mower.

KAGE Katcher Motorized Grass Catchers

The KAGE Katcher is a high-capacity (5.8 cf) side discharge grass catcher with an electric actuator that allows you to open and close the collection basket even while in motion. Emptying of the metal catcher is done with a simple electric toggle switch. Steel Kage Katchers are available for purchase online, while aluminum KAGE Katchers may be purchased over the phone at 844-314-KAGE.
