Crossover relief is standard on all Kage models. Crossover relief, optional on most other brands, is an absolute necessity. Without crossover relief, when an object is struck on one end of the blade there will be a surge of fluid pressure which may, at the least, burst a hose or at the worst cause internal damage to the machine hydraulics. Of course, crossover relief is, like the trip edge, also there to protect the operator by cushioning the impact.

Snow Plow Crossover Relief System

Break-away trip mechanisms are common to most commercial snowplows. The breakaway, or ‘trip’ mechanism is the safety mechanical relief system that prevents operator injury, and damage to equipment and the obstacle. If an immovable obstacle is accidentally struck, the trip mechanism allows the plow to fold down, or back, clearing the obstacle without extreme adverse effect. Similarly, the hydraulic system of the plow can have a relief system built in, so that the hydraulic system is not harmed from such an impact. Kage Innovation produces the highest quality snow plows and snow pushers on the market today, all of which are equipped with hydraulic crossover relief systems.

Hydraulic Snow Plow Relief System

Have you ever been out there plowing, it’s the middle of the night (or later), the wind is howling through the back window you have open. Drifts are forming over the massive piles of snow you are forming as you push them up time after time. The drifting snow is seemingly relentless, and every pass you make into the pile seems to increase the drift-back potential. As you continue to fight back, and push on the windrow, your mind starts to wander. You wonder if you will ever be able to make it home. Coffee makes you sick, the doughnuts you bought 6 hours ago are stale, and…. BAM! Suddenly your windshield is covered in reddish fluid, and your plow seems lifeless as it rests in the snow bank. You instinctively try to activate the plows’ hydraulics, but the only response is another bath of fluid sprayed onto your windshield and all over the snowy parking lot next to you. You hit something, and your plow hydraulics no longer work. You can’t lift the plow, much less angle it. The nearest parking lot light is about 100 yards away, and you have to limp the machine over to it to inspect. All the while you are driving to the light, you are wondering: what am I going to do? There are no mechanics around, I don’t have access to a hydraulic shop, and I have a contract to maintain! This is the worst case scenario for a contractor that doesn’t have a plow that utilizes a crossover relief system.

The scenario above is avoided by the crossover relief system; just like what is found on all of the Kage Innovation snow plows and snow pushers. The crossover relief system prevents the impact from obstacles from turning into major pressure spikes in the hydraulic system. Sometimes, these pressure spikes can burst hydraulic line, hoses, cylinders, or may even cause internal damage to your machine! The Kage crossover system virtually eliminates pressure spikes over 3,000 PSI (standard machine operating pressure) but still allows the operator to maintain full control over the snowplow. It is like a momentary ‘trip’ of the hydraulic system. No harm done.
