Lawn mower leaf collector attachments come in sizes ranging from 2 cubic feet to 54 cubic feet. This depends on the type of attachment that is being used and the size of the attachment.

Leaf collectors are made for almost all types of mowers such as, a zero turn, walk behind, and stand on. They are manufactured for most large mower brands such as Craftsman, John Deere, Ariens, Toro, Exmark, and Wright.

What are the different types of lawn mower leaf catchers?

The different types of leaf collector attachments include:

  • Bags
  • Baskets/ Bins
  • Carts

What is the difference between the lawn mower leaf collector attachments?

Bag Leaf Collector

Fabric Bag Grass CatcherA bag leaf collector mounts either to the mower shoot or the back of the mower. This attachment has the largest range of capacity ranging from 2 cubic feet to 54 cubic feet.

A bag leaf collector is made out of fabric with a metal steel frame to attach to the mowers. Fabric leaf collector bags weigh as little as 1 pound and can weigh up to 40 pounds depending on how much capacity it has and the type of plastic it has. A full bag with dry leaves weighs within the range of 10 to 270 and 30 to 810 if the leaves are wet.

Bag systems vary in cost from $25 – $900 and are available for zero turn, riding mowers, stand on mowers, walk behinds, stand on, and push mowers.

Basket Leaf Collector

This type of collector is made out of steel or aluminum. An aluminum leaf catcher weighs about 10 to 40 pounds and a steel collector weighs up to 72 pounds. A full aluminum grass catcher with dry leaves can weigh up to 100 pounds and 160 if the leaves are wet. A steel bin weighs up to 130 pounds with dry leaves and 200 with wet leaves.

When it comes to lifting the grass catcher off of the mower, it gets tiring to dump 80 to 200 pounds multiple times a day. This can be made easier by purchasing a smaller bin, or one with lighter material. However the problem with that, is the bin will have to be emptied more often taking more time out of the day.

This can be solved by an electrically actuated leaf collector. With this system, all the operator must do is flip a switch and the basket opens like a clam shell and dumps out the clippings. The KAGE Katcher is a one of a kind grass catcher and leaf catcher, made in either steel or aluminum, that makes it easy for the operator and makes spring and fall clean up more efficient. This system has a 400lb lift capacity so that, whether the system is steel or aluminum it gets the job done with power to spare.

Standard basket leaf collector attachments range from $300 – $700. The self-dumping KAGE Katcher has a 5.8 cubic foot capacity, with dimensions of 47 x 19 x 24 inches, a weight of 39 pounds, and ranges from $850 to $1,200.

Cart Leaf Catcher Attachment

Most cart leaf collectors have a capacity of about 25 cubic feet. These are manufactured for riding mowers, zero turns, and garden tractors. Most are made from a combination of steel, plastic, and fabric components. Cart leaf collectors mount to the back of the mower like a trailer.

These weigh about 20 pounds by themselves and up to 270 pounds with dry leaves and 520 with wet leaves.

The price range for this system is between $400 and $600.
