Plow stakes or snow stakes are plastic, metal, or fiberglass driveway markers that are driven into the ground that indicate where the edge of the pavement is after a snowfall. Professional contractors or homeowners use these to minimize damage to their lawns during the winter months. If a snow plow or snow blower operator does not know where the edge of the pavement is, he/she risks driving or plowing over the lawn and damaging the turf. This costs time and money when spring comes to fix the damage that could have been prevented by using a snow stake.

The Challenge

Snow stakes are an excellent tool to prevent property and equipment damage. However, snow stakes do come with some challenges. Each material comes with its own pros and cons.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass stakes are a rigid design and are built to withstand the harsh winter weather.  Beneficially, fiberglass stakes are reflective, which makes them easy to see, even in the dark. Another advantage to fiberglass is that the rigidity allows it to have an additional reflective plastic on top of it to give it greater visibility.

The difficulty with fiberglass is that it is breakable. If it is run over, or hit with enough force, it will shatter, which may cause future issues to equipment or property. Fiberglass is also expensive. Commercial contractors may steer away from this material because it becomes rather costly when they have to stake hundreds of driveways. It is also difficult to handle. Without the proper protection, someone who is putting in the stakes may get shards of glass in his/her hand. This plow stake is also less than ideal around children. Children are bound to play with the stake and wind up getting glass in their hands.

Plastic

The benefits of plastic stakes are that they are flexible and lightweight. Due to its flexibility, a plastic plow stake can withstand some impact. It may also have reflective tape on it, to improve visibility.

Plastic plow stakes are lightweight and can be carried around all day with little discomfort. They are portable and simply installed.

This solves some of the problems with the fiberglass stake, but it comes with its own challenges. Most plastic stakes, once they have bent, are now unusable. If they have been run over, or torn out of the ground, it is likely they will suffer substantial damage. If you never have a steak ripped out of the ground or run over, this would not be a problem. However, this is bound to happen and should be considered when buying plow stakes.

Metal

Metal stakes are strong and long-lasting. They are sturdy and may have reflective tape or even a reflective disk on top of it.

However, there are some major problems that come with a metal stake. Even though they are heavy-duty, they are inconvenient. They are heavy and are difficult to carry comfortably all day while staking hundreds of driveways. They can also cause damage to property, vehicles and equipment. If a metal stake is run over, it may damage the car or machine. The stake may at the very least scratch or dent the car, or it may get would around the wheel and possibly tear the tire. Second, it may tear up the turf and cause for more work in the spring. This ends up costing more time and money that the rigidity is worth.
