What is a Mower Sulky?

A mower sulky is an attachment for a commercial walk-behind mower that allows the operator to ride behind the mower instead of walking. Sulkies enable the operator to cover more ground in less time, due to it’s comfortability and efficiency.

There are two main types of mower sulkies; a one wheel sulky and a two-wheel sulky.

One-Wheel Sulky Pros and Cons

Pros

The primary benefit of the one-wheel mower sulky is that it is more maneuverable than the general two-wheel caddy. A one-wheel sulky moves easier in tight spaces because the single wheel allows for tighter turns.

Another benefit of the single-wheel caddy is that there is less maintenance required. Having only one wheel results in less maintenance compared to the two-wheel sulkies simply due to the number of wheels. This also means that there are half the wear components for the single tire than the two-wheel caddy. However, the rest of the replacement parts have the same amount.

Lastly, the one-wheel sulky is transported easier. The weight of the system is lighter and more compact because it does not have an additional wheel.

Cons

A single-wheel caddy is generally less stable than a two-wheel mower sulky, especially on uneven terrain. The operator needs to be skilled enough to balance their walk behind mower sulky and their machine simultaneously. This provides greater risk for operator injury and lastly, this system has a lower weight capacity and may not suit everyone.

The Pros and Cons of a Two-Wheel Sulky

Pros

One benefit of a two-wheel caddy system is that they are more stable, making it a safer option with less liability. The operator does not have to learn how to balance themself while mowing. One can just get on and start cutting grass. The two-wheel walk behind mower sulky also creates an easier ride by covering more terrain and going over bumps more smoothly.

Additionally, these mower sulkies also have a higher weight capacity. The adaptability of the two-wheel caddy is important especially for commercial contractors who share their machinery.

Cons

A two-wheel sulky is more structurally sound, but that means that it is bulkier and harder to swivel around tight spaces. By weighing slightly more than a single-wheel sulky, it makes the two-wheel caddy slightly more difficult to transport.

Each model comes standard with high quality wear components. The wheel is a 3-piece system making maintenance quick and easy with minimal tools. Each wheel is built with a tapered roller bearing that is basically a smaller version of a trailer bearing. This increases the life of the bearing and minimizes the wheel maintenance. In addition, each Wheel Kaddy is also built with greaseable pivot points to keep your equipment in prime condition.

The KAGE wheel caddy also has a high-quality grade 50 steel platform. This platform is formed to be the most ergonomic and comfortable for the operator. There are water drainage holes and a ridge in the middle to provide a place for the operators feet on sloped or slanted terrain.

To make it easy for operators, KAGE has a quick release yoke mount for each of their models. This allows the operator to take their sulky on or off and switch it between mowers in a matter of seconds just by pushing a button. This allows you to keep the same mount on your mower and simply switch the attachment. KAGE offers two different mounts, one designed for the ExMark walk behind mowers and the other for universal use which may require some fabrication.
